During the day, The Kantina functions as a restaurant and bar, a bookshop, a co-working space with wi-fi and an exhibition space. After nightfall it can become a space for debates, exchanges and parties.
It is very rare to see a theatre develop in such a horizontal manner, deploying four auditoriums arranged around a central foyer opening onto an extraordinary setting: the shores of Lake Geneva. Initially baptised ,La Kantine” to evoke German theatres, along with Max Bill, the architect of the building in 1964, it is now known as “La Kantina”, alluding to the multilingualism of Switzerland, its capacity for dialogue and open-mindedness towards others and difference – something that is also inherent to artistic experiences. La Kantina is the site of encounters and discussions that makes Vidy so unique. Since its renovation in 2014, the venue has become more spacious and bright. It has been fitted with better acoustics, new furniture, a lounge, and a free Wi-Fi connection.
Each auditorium in the theatre is equipped with magnetic loops that render the plays accessible to persons with hearing aids - subject to technical compatibility with the show.
Vidy also offers foreign-language plays with French surtitles, as well as choreographic and visual shows.
